L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

University offers class on Lady Gaga and fame
The University of South Carolina will offer a sociology class in all things Gaga next semester, Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame.
■Class discussion: How would you explain to your parents that this is the class you're taking next year and they're paying for it? Is there a place in college curriculum for classes on pop culture? How does this prepare you for the future? Or is it just fun, albeit expensive fun?
