B. South Asian monsoons bring much anticipated rainfall to the region every year from June through September. The monsoon is the primary delivery mechanism for fresh water to the area, affecting the environment, agriculture, society, hydropower production and geography.
A. Afghanistan has a gross domestic product per person of $2,000 a year, compared with $4,600 in Pakistan. The people of China, Iran and India are all better off than Pakistan, according to the CIA World Factbook. Pakistan is bordered to the north and west by Afghanistan, to the northeast by China, to the east by India, to the south by the Indian Ocean and to the southwest by Iran.
D. During the 1980s Soviet-Afghan War, Pakistan hosted the men who later founded these rival militant groups. And in 2011, U.S. forces raided a compound inside Pakistan where they killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in what Pakistani officials called "an unauthorized unilateral action" that would not be tolerated in the future.
C. In August 1947, the departing British partitioned their former colony into India with a Hindu majority and Pakistan with a Muslim majority. The partition displaced between 10 and 20 million people along religious lines, creating overwhelming calamity. It is estimated that up to 2 million people died during the migration between the two new countries.
