Jan. 6-May 12, 2010: "The Colts Fire"

The Colts Fire, a story based on the arson fire of the Colt Armory in Hartford, Connecticut during the Civil War and written by history teacher Tom Ratliff will begin in January. Follow the adventures of Amanda, a well-to-do New England 14-year-old, her friend Sammy, an ambitious African-American kid transplanted from South Carolina, and Olivia, a young Irish girl charged with caring for her family. This 19-chapter mystery comes with an extensive teacher's guide. Themes include: diversity, immigration, Civil War history, mystery, character education, heroes and family. This story is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school level readers.
