If you are a Reading One teacher or literacy coach in Pinellas County, check this site regularly for updates and new materials for your schools and classrooms.

Nov. 1, 2005

NIE Education Specialist Jill Wilson visited the Pinellas County Reading Coaches meeting to deliver new materials and gather information from her frontline NIE contacts. Some coaches shared that the large number of Sunday papers ordered by their teachers had created challenges for school plant operators. A solution was proposed for those schools with Sunday paper overflow -- coaches could decrease the number of Sunday papers to 10 per reading class and order classroom sets of Monday papers for individual student use. The Sunday papers along with the PARADE magazine curriculum (downloadable here) could be used for small group instruction or at classroom literacy stations. Coaches who would like to change their orders can e-mail the downloadable form below (Sunday to Monday request) to : nie@tampabay.com.

Wilson will return for the December coaches meeting to introduce her new colleague, Jodi Pushkin, Times NIE Liaison.

Wilson also demonstrated how to use new materials (downloadable below).

The Dali Desktopper can be copied on light card stock and folded so students can prop it on their desks for use when reading. Students can customize this fun foldable - they can draw or collage their surreal self- portrait! The before, during and after reading strategies on the reverse side can be a constant resource for students as they work to improve their comprehension skills.

The Parent Involvement activity is a great way to get the entire family reading the news together. At the end of the day, rather than recycling the Times, teachers can send the paper home with this form so students can continue to reap the rewards of reading practice. Parents will find that reading the paper with their teenager can be a great way to keep lines of communication open with these mysterious beings!

Weather Bingo is a fun Friday or after-test activity which reinforces student research skills (Sunshine State Standard LA.A.2.4.2). Although this form focuses on the weather, teachers can customize it to fit their content area. For example, a geography teacher could replace the weather prompts with cities, rivers, countries, etc.

The St. Petersburg Times is proud to collaborate with the Pinellas County School System in a new community literacy partnership, NEWS Lessons That Work!

For the 2005-06 school year, new high school reading classes will use the Times as an integral part of their curriculum. The first step in this partnership is the creation of newspaper based literacy centers for the Reading One classrooms. If you were unable to attend the preplanning session held at Pinellas Park High School on July 29, 2005, more information and training on how to implement this program will come from your school's reading coach or Secondary Reading Supervisor Dan Evans.
