Mark Zuckerberg thinks it's "pretty crazy" for people to blame Facebook for contributing to the election results. Critics have blamed Facebook for swaying public opinion by spreading fake news articles about each candidate. Fake news articles appear to have become more common on Facebook after it replaced its human editorial team with a computer algorithm earlier this year. Zuckerberg defends Facebook by saying it is just a tech company.
Class discussion: Do you believe what you read on Facebook and other social media? Why or why not? Before you re-post it, do you check social media “news” to see if it’s true? How do you check news stories? What newspapers or other sources do you use to verify a news report? Where did the fake news reports come from during the campaign? Should social media companies be held responsible for content on their sites? Are people more likely to believe a lie if it agrees with their existing beliefs?
