Activities:

1. Draw a picture of Frederick Douglass having dinner with four people from today's newspaper. Write a sentence about each person telling why he would be a good guest. For extra fun: Paste newspaper pictures of foods that might be on the table.

2. Select three newspaper stories that Frederick Douglass might be interested in today. Explain your choices.

3. Collect newspaper stories about people who are fighting to protect other people’s rights. Identify the rights that are involved. Explain what the people fighting for rights hope to accomplish.

4. How were these important to Frederick Douglass’ life: (a) abolition, (b) learning to read and write, (c) Anna Murray and (d) speaking in Europe?

5. Write a letter to Frederick Douglass discussing how events today are related to the work he did during his lifetime.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students use biographies and stories to understand the individuals who are honored by the nation. (Social Studies: History)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
