Activities:

1. Draw a Happy Birth day cake for Thomas Jefferson. Next to your cake, paste newspaper pictures of gifts you might give Mr. Jefferson. Share your gift ideas with friends.

2. Select three people from the newspaper that you would invite to dinner with Thomas Jefferson – guests you think he might like to meet. Explain your choices.

3. Get four colored markers – red, blue, green and yellow (or colors of your choice). Go through the newspaper and put colored stars on newspaper stories and/or ads that you think Thomas Jefferson would like. Use red for things he might like to learn; blue for music , literature and the arts; green for politics; and yellow for science

4. How did these people or events impact Jefferson’s life: (a) George Wythe, (b) the Virginia House of Burgesses, (c) John Adams and (d) William Douglas?

5. If Thomas Jefferson were president today, what issues or situations would he probably think are the most important? Find several news stories that show situations he would want to fix. Write a paragraph explaining your choices.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
