Activities:

1. In " Big Cat, Little Cat , " a family cat teaches a young kitten about life, like where to eat, when to rest and where to drink. Pick a different animal – a dog, a hamster, a horse. Draw several pictures of your animal teaching a young animal about what to do. Write a sentence explaining each of your pictures.

2. Find a newspaper story that appeals to you. Create a 4 - to - 6 - frame story board that tells the story with only drawings.

3. " Hello Universe " tells a story of three children who join together to find another child who is missin g. Find a newspaper story about people joining together to help a person or a situation. Write about how working together helped solve the problem.

4. Which book in today’s Mini Page would you recommend to a (a) geologist, (b) fisherman, (c) animal right s activist and (d) veterinarian?

5. Author Meg Medina makes this comment about " Piecing Me Together " : “An honest look at how girls stitch together their talents to find their voice and power.” Create a “Piecing Me Together” newspaper portfolio that shows your talents, interests and goals. Collect news stories, headlines, words and pictures that explain you. Put your news paper clippings in a notebook. Share your notebook with your family. You might do the activity with friends. What did you learn about your friends from their portfolios?
