Activities:

1. Draw three pictures of different times in Thurgood Marshall’s life. Then paste newspaper words under your pictures that describe Marshall’s life at that time.

2. Find three people in the newspaper that Thurgood Marshall would like to meet and discuss issues. Explain your choices.

3. Identify five news stories that would interest Thurgood Marshall. How do you think he might react to these modern events and situations?

4. How were these important in Thurgood Marshall’s life: (a) the Constitution, (b) “Thoroughgood,” (c) Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, and (d) President Lyndon Johnson?

5. Discuss how Thurgood Marshall’s father and Thurgood’s elementary school experiences influenced his life. Now discuss two people or situations that are influencing your own education and personal growth. How is your life similar to Thurgood Marshall’s?

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students use biographies and stories to understand the individuals who are honored by the nation. (Social Studies: History)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
