Activities:

1. Design an “All About Me” poster. Paste newspaper words and pictures about your favorite foods and favorite activities on your poster. Put a star by any word/picture that represents another culture.

2. Go through the newspaper and circle your favorite restaurants. What cultures d o those restaurants represent? Compare your favorite restaurants with a friend’s favorites.

3. Talk to several adult family members and friends about their early family members. Where did those individuals live originally? Why did they come to this country? Find their home countries on a map or globe. Ask your friends and family members to name the kinds of foods that came from their home countries.

4. How are these important to people who want to settle in this country: (a) language, (b) naturalization, (c) Emma Lazarus and (d) visas?

5. Get together with several friends. Have each friend select a different part of the world. Give each person a large paper plate. Have your friends go through the newspaper and look for any examples of food, clothing or culture that comes from their part of the world. Have them paste their words/pictures on their plates. Have everyone share what they found when they’re finished.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students understand the ideas, principles and practices of citizenship in a democratic republic. (Social studies: Civics)
