Activities:

1. Write the word “Louisa” in the middle of a piece of paper. Now paste newspaper words that describe Louisa May Alcott around her name on the paper.

2. Select newspaper stories that might appeal to different groups of people. Find a story for young girls, young boys, women and men. Explain your choices.

3. Go through the newspaper and circle the names of reporters whose bylines are listed on their stories. How many women are represented? How many men?

4. How are these important to Louisa May Alcott: (a) Thomas Niles, (b) Jo, (c) making money and (d) movies?

5. Select three stories in the newspaper that Louisa May Alcott might like to use as the basis for her own novel. Now select the one you like best and write a story outline for your own book. Be sure to include characters for the story and interesting events that take place. Give your story a title.

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page content and offer activities that will help your students reach them.

This week's standard:
Students use biographies and stories to understand the individuals who are honored by the nation. (Social Studies: History)

(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
