Common Core State Standard L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Spotify's Mobile App Wants A Lot Of Your Personal Data
A recent update to the Spotify music app wants access to “contacts, photos or media files” stored on a mobile device, data from GPS and movement sensors, some voice commands and contact information. After an online uproar over the new privacy policy, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek promised “We will only use it for specific purposes that will allow you to customize your Spotify experience.”
■Class discussion: Do you trust online companies to protect the personal information you give them? Why or why not? Can you find some examples of hackers stealing personal information from websites? Does it bother you that websites and cellphone apps gather so much information about you? Do you do anything to protect yourself from all the snooping? Would you remove a phone app that was tracking your movements and friends?
