The '100 Deadliest Days' For Teen Drivers
AAA is warning teen drivers about the "100 deadliest days," the period starting on Memorial Day when teen deaths from car wrecks have historically spiked. Over the past five years, an average of 10 people have died per day in crashes involving teen drivers during the summer school break. The AAA study says nearly 60 percent of teen crashes involved a distracted driver. Texting is a problem, but teens are more likely to be distracted by a passenger.
■Class discussion: If passengers are the biggest distraction for teen drivers, should new drivers be prohibited from driving with passengers until they gain more experience? Should texting or talking on a cellphone be a more serious traffic offense – one that could lead to a suspended license? How do accident rates of teen drivers compare with other age groups? Drivers are often called the biggest traffic safety problem. Do you think computer-driven vehicles could be safer?
