EU might abolish daylight saving time
With 84 percent of its people telling pollsters they favor the change, the European Union is considering doing away with daylight saving time. The EU officially adopted daylight saving time in 1996, claiming the move cuts down on energy costs. But officials say the overall energy savings is small. They also say the claims that the time switch affects health and road safety are inconclusive.
■Class discussion: Do the semiannual time changes for daylight saving time bother you? Can you remember whether you turn clocks ahead or back one hour in the fall? When did the practice of daylight saving time start in the United States? What was the reason for it? What are the arguments for keeping or ending daylight saving time? What do you think?
