C. The United States invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to remove the Taliban from power after they refused to hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the 9/11 terror attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. The Islamic fundamentalist Taliban rulers had allowed bin Laden to run his network and train his operatives in Afghanistan.
B. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north, and China to the northeast. U.S. troops failed to capture bin Laden after invading Afghanistan. But, he was later tracked down and killed by U.S. Special Forces as he hid inside a safe house in Pakistan.
D. Turkey is the largest host of refugees in the world, with approximately 3.7 million, including about 200,000 Afghans. But, the vast majority of refugees fled a decade-long civil war in Syria on Turkey’s southern border in southwestern Asia. Civil wars also are displacing thousands of people in the African nations of Ethiopia, Libya and South Sudan.
A. Turkey is accelerating construction of an 186-mile wall along its eastern border with Iran to deal with the surge in Afghans fleeing the Taliban, who have seized control of much of Afghanistan and are now threatening to take three cities.
