L.CCS.1/2/3/4 Grades 6-12: Video of a current news event is presented for discussion to encourage student participation, but also inspire the use of evidence to support logical claims using the main ideas of the video. Students must analyze background information provided about a current event, draw out the main ideas and key details, and review different opinions on the issue. Then, students should present their own claims using facts and analysis for support.

Paraglider accidentally soars more than 5 miles high
A 55-year-old paraglider testing some equipment in China got caught in a strong updraft that sent him up to an altitude of more than 28,200 feet above sea level, nearly as high as Mount Everest and airliner flight paths. “I felt the lack of oxygen. My hands were frozen outside,” said Peng Yujiang, whose ordeal was captured by cameras attached to his equipment. After he landed safely, local sporting officials grounded Peng for six months.■Class discussion: Other paragliders have been caught in what they call “cloud suck” and soared to extreme altitudes, and some have died.
