1. KNICKS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Finals. Jalen Brunson led the team with 45 points in the final game and was named Finals MVP. The Knicks’ playoff run was especially dramatic because they repeatedly came from behind, including a record-setting comeback from 29 points down in Game 4. For New York fans, the championship ended decades of frustration and brought a powerful sense of celebration across the city. The Spurs, led by young star Victor Wembanyama, fell short but showed they may be a strong team for years to come. Create a sports front page for the day after the Knicks’ championship. Include a headline, one short news paragraph, one quote from a fan or player, and a small illustration or photo caption. Your page should explain why this win mattered beyond just one basketball game.

2. SWITZERLAND VOTES ON POPULATION CAP

Switzerland is preparing to vote on whether to cap its population at 10 million people. Supporters say the country is becoming too crowded, with higher housing costs, packed trains, traffic, and pressure on nature. Opponents argue that the plan would sharply reduce immigration and hurt Switzerland’s economy, which depends on workers from other countries. Many immigrants come from nearby European nations and work as doctors, engineers, business leaders, and other skilled employees. The debate shows how questions about migration can connect to jobs, housing, national identity, and daily quality of life. Make a two-column chart showing arguments for and against Switzerland’s population cap. Then write a short paragraph explaining which concerns seem easiest to solve with policy changes, such as housing or transportation improvements, and which seem more difficult.

3. PARAMOUNT-WARNER BROS. MERGER MOVES FORWARD

The U.S. Justice Department decided not to challenge a major merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. If completed, the deal would bring together famous movie studios, streaming services such as Paramount+ and HBO Max, and news networks including CNN and CBS News. Supporters say the merger could create a stronger company in a competitive entertainment industry. Critics worry it could reduce competition, giving writers, actors, crews, and producers fewer companies to work with or sell ideas to. State officials and regulators in other countries may still review the deal. Why could it be a problem or challenge if there are only a few companies that own all the news networks? Look up how media companies work in other countries with governments similar and different to ours in the U.S. Write a paragraph describing what similarities and differences you notice. Write at least one way you predict the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger could affect Americans.

4. SPENCER PRATT ACCEPTS L.A. PRIMARY RESULTS

Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star and Republican candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, finished third in the city’s primary election. Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Nithya Raman, both Democrats, will move on to a runoff election in November. President Trump claimed Pratt’s loss showed election fraud, but he did not provide evidence. Pratt did not appear to challenge the results, though he said he would keep criticizing the two remaining candidates. The story highlights how election results, mail ballots, and public trust can become major issues after a close or closely watched race. Write a short “election explainer” for younger students. Explain why vote counting can take more than one day, especially when many people vote by mail. Then describe why it is important for candidates and leaders to be careful when making claims about election fraud.

5. JUDGE BLOCKS REMOVAL OF NATIONAL PARK SIGNS

A federal judge temporarily stopped the National Park Service from removing or changing signs, films, and exhibits that show difficult parts of American history. The ruling came after President Trump directed parks to remove materials that he said portrayed the country negatively. Some removed materials discussed slavery, Indigenous people, and climate change. The judge said national parks should tell the full story of the United States, including painful and complicated parts. Advocacy groups praised the ruling, while the Interior Department criticized it and may appeal. Choose a historic place that teaches visitors about the past. Design one exhibit sign for that place that tells a difficult but important truth. Your sign should include a title, three key facts, and one question that encourages visitors to think more deeply about history.
