NFL players, coaches, and owners standing in solidarity during the national anthem on Sunday, defying President Donald Trump's call for protesting players to be fired. The day's first show of protest starting in London, where more than a dozen members of the Jacksonville Jaguars took a knee for the Star-Spangled Banner. Other team members locked arms in unity. Once games began stateside, players from the New Orleans Saints, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and more choosing to either take a knee, sit, link arms or a combination of the gestures.
Class discussion: What do you think of the players’ protests? What do you think of President Trump’s statements?? Should both the players and president have the right to freely express their beliefs? Why or why not? What are the limits on Americans’ freedom of speech? How are racial issues involved in this controversy? How important is this debate? Is this controversy distracting Americans from more important news and issues?
