Our Mission

Mission Statement
The mission of the Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education program is to serve educators, students and families by providing funded newspapers, companion materials and instructional support in an effort to build Times readership and secure the newspaper's place as a vital component of lifelong education.

About NIE

The Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education program (NIE) is a cooperative effort between school districts and the Times to promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource – a "living textbook." Since the 1970s, NIE has served educators, students, families and community members in the Tampa Bay area by providing class sets of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Tampa Bay Times, plus award-winning original educational publications, teacher guides, lesson plans, educator professional development resources and much more – all at no cost to schools, teachers or families.

NIE educational publications have won recognition from organizations such as the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, the Florida Advertising and Marketing Executives and the National Newspaper Association, including a prestigious World Young Reader Prize in both 2013 and 2014.

NIE is a member of Florida Press Educational Services (FPES), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of Florida newspaper professionals whose mission is to promote literacy and critical thinking, particularly for young people. FPES was founded in 1980 as Florida Newspaper in Education Coordinators. For more than 40 years, FPES has successfully coordinated large-scale, award-winning educational projects throughout the state of Florida.
